Menbing (braised baked bread)

Menbing is a specialty in the north where wheat is a major crop. It’s a classic Han ethnicity delicacy that originates from the Jizhou District of Hebei Province.

Menbing is braised, shredded, baked bread. It is a very common and popular dish or staple food, with a long story, to the locals.

Every restaurant in the streets, big or small, is able to make delicious menbing. And almost every local household knows how to make it. It’s a true people’s dish.

But there’s one taboo about eating menbing. Menbing is not something for birthdays or important holidays, as it sounds like “getting sick” in Chinese. Thus, the people don’t eat it on important days, which doesn’t mean it’s not liked.
