Yuanmingyuan Ruins Park

Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace) was a prestigious imperial garden in Qing dynasty made up of three gardens: Garden of Perfect Brightness, Garden of Eternal Spring and Elegant Spring Garden, which are so splendid and exquisite that Yuanmingyuan was once reputed as the "Garden of Gardens" in its heyday. In 1860, during the Second Opium War, as the Anglo-French expedition force set the entire place ablaze. Main buildings were reduced to ashes. Visitors can only linger amid the ruins and imagine how magnificence of the place and the grandeur of the empire. Gardening in Yuanmingyuan excels at waterscape such as the broad and serene lake and the narrow and rapid streams. It is composed of two areas, the Fuhai Lake Scenic Area and the Back Lake Scenic Area. Fuhai Lake is the largest water body in the garden, named after the idiom fu ru dong hai (“may your happiness be as immense as the East Sea”), and used to be a water amusement center in the imperial garden.
