Yungang Grottoes

Yungang Grottoes, imposingly chiseled on the mountain slope and extending for about one kilometer from east to west, is one of the four famous treasure houses of Chinese grotto art (The other three are the Dunhuang Mogao Caves, Luoyang Longmen Grottoes and Maijishan Grottoes). Among the over 5,000 statues in 51 grottoes, the tallest is 17 meters and the smallest is just a few centimeters. The various statues are vivid, lifelike, elegant, and graceful.

In 2001, the Yungang Grottoes were inscribed on the World Cultural Heritage List. Among them, the Tanyao Five Grottoes boast a rigorous and unified layout and design representative of a highly developed period of Chinese Buddhist art. The statues in Wuhua Grotto are beautifully carved and highly varied, providing valuable materials for the study of the history, art, music, dance, calligraphy, and architecture of the Northern Wei Dynasty.
