Hani Rice Terraces

The Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces are located in the southern Ailao Mountains of Yunnan's Yuanyang County. They are like a picturesque living fossil of the Hani people's lives over the past 1,300 years.

The Hani Rice Terraces are huge, with 170,000 mu of terraces in Yuanyang County alone. As the glow of the sun sets over the rice terraces, the sky is filled with billowing clouds and red blaze, looking like a phoenix being reborn from the flames and soaring above the terraces, making a spectacular sight.

The best time of year for photography at the Hani Rice Terraces is between November and April the following year. During this period the terraces lie empty, filled with layer upon layer of lucid water that gives of an exquisite radiance. Either side of the Spring Festival, a sea of clouds can often be witnessed, and either side of the Lantern Festival, wild cherry blossoms, kapok, peach blossom and birchleaf pears fill the mountains with reds and whites, making for a splendid scene.
