Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor

The Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor is the resting place of the Yellow Emperor Xuanyuan, the cultural ancestor of Chinese nation. Ancient tomb No. 1 is known as “the first mausoleum in China.” The scenic area is also the birthplace of Chinese sacrificial ceremonies. The Yellow Emperor Memorial Ceremony here has been inscribed on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

The Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor is home to China’s oldest, largest, and best preserved ancient cypress group. A total of around over 80,000 ancient cypresses grow here, and more than 30,000 of them are over 1,000 years old. “The Cypress Planted by the Yellow Emperor” dates back to more than 5,000 years ago and it is believed to be personally planted by the Yellow Emperor. It is the world’s oldest cypress and is known as “the father of cypresses in the world” and “the champion of cypresses in the world.”

Almost everyone who comes to Huangling County to pay respects to the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor will see the Yellow Emperor’s footprints in Xuanyuan Temple. The footprints are impressed on a blue stone about one square meter in size. Many visitors try to put their feet on the Yellow Emperor’s footprints, symbolizing that they will “follow the steps of the Yellow Emperor.”
