Administrative Division:

Hunan

Located in the middle reaches of the Yangtze basin in Central China, Hunan is named after "Jinghu Nanlu", an administrative region established in Song Dynasty. With the Xiang River running from south to north through the province, Hunan is officially abbreviated to "Xiang" in Chinese. It’s known as the "land of hibiscus", as legend that hibiscus used to be planted in large numbers across the Xiang River basin, as evidenced by the Tang Dynasty poet Tan Yongzhi's line "The autumn wind sweeps across the land of hibiscus for ten thousand li".
Hunan is a land steeped in history with distinctive folk customs, providing tourists opportunity to experience cultural charms and natural sceneries. Visitors can listen to the gurgling Tuo River, and admire Yueyang Tower perched above Dongting Lake. The land was home to important historical figures such as Zeng Guofan, Mao Zedong and Liu Shaoqi, whom exerted a profound influence on contemporary Chinese history.
