Nadam Fair

“Nadam” has a long history. According to the Stone of Genghis Khan carved on the stony cliffs, the Nadam Fair can be traced back to the early period of the foundation of Mongol Khanate. As early as A.D.1206, when Genghis Khan was elected as the King of Mongolia, he held “Dahuligetai ”(big party) and gathered all tribe leaders from July to August every year to review his army, maintain and distribute the meadow. Nadam was held to strengthen the friendship, pray for and celebrate the harvest. At the beginning, only an event among archery, wrestling, and horse-racing was held. In Yuan Dynasty and Qing Dynasty, three events were combined together as a fixed event form. Later, Mongolians also named the three events as Nadam for short.
