As one of main birthplaces of Chinese nation, Kaifeng has a history of over 2,700 years. Seven dynasties of ancient China made the capital here. It is one of the Six Great Ancient Capitals of China. In history, Kaifeng was reputed as “with snow-covered trees, glorious morning glow and five-phoenix houses, Yimen (the present Kaifeng) was the capital since ancient times” and “there is no such city as prosperous Bianjing (the present Kaifeng)”. Along the River During the Qingming Festival drawn by Zhang Zeduan, a famous painter of Northern Song Dynasty, and Dongjing Meng Hua Lu (Dreams of Splendor of the Eastern Capital) written by Meng Yuanlao, were a true portrayal of prosperous Kaifeng in ancient China. Long history and profound culture endow Kaifeng with reputation of an ancient capital of seven dynasties and a city of chrysanthemums. The present Kaifeng is a national historic and cultural city, an excellent tourism city of China, the core city of Central Plains Economic Zone, an important city along Lianyungang - Lanzhou Railway, and one of key cities among Central Plains Urban Agglomeration along golden tourism route by the Yellow River. There are lots of lakes in downtown Kaifeng, such as Baogong Lake, Longting Lake, Xibei Lake, Tieta Lake and Yangguang Lake. The water area reaches 145 hectares, accounting for 1/4 of old city area. It is a famous “water city in the north” and enjoys the reputation that “the whole city is filled with charm of Song Dynasty and half of the city is covered by water”.
