Potala Palace Scenic Spot
Perched on the top of the Hongshan Mountain in the northwest of the downtown area of Lhasa which is the capital of Tibet, Potala Palace is a grand castle-style building group. It is known as the "Pearl on the Roof of the World", and it is the sign of Lhasa and even the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and once the political center of Tibet. This world’s highest and most magnificent palace is home to extremely abundant cultural relics and crafts and also unique cultural heritage of snow-covered areas. The Potala Palace was built in the middle of the 7th century. As for the building reasons, one lies in the development needs, as Srongtsen Gampo moved the ruling center from the Shannan Zedang area to the current Potala Palace to consolidate his political power and built Hongshan Palace (the original name of Potala Palace) on Hongshan Mountain in Lhasa to defend foreign aggression. The other reason is that Potala Palace was built by Srongtsen Gampo to greet his bride Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty.
