Wuzhen Ancient Town Tourist Area
Wuzhen lies in the northern end of Tongxiang City, Zhejiang Province, 13 km from downtown Tongxiang. Titled as “the Land of Fish and Rice, the Home of Silk”, it is enlisted among the six ancient towns south of the Yangtze River with Zhouzhuang, Tongli, Luzhi, Xitang and Nanxun. Wuzhen is a National 5A Level Scenic Spot as well as one of the 20 recommended tourist attractions for the golden week. It was formerly named as “Wudun” and “Qingdun”, boasting a long history of 6 millenniums. In 1991, it was rated as the famous historic and cultural city of Zhejiang, and since 1999, the protection and tourism development project of the ancient town was initiated. As a typical water town south of the Yangtze River, Wuzhen has completely reserved the style and design of ancient water towns in late Qing Dynasty and the Republican period. The street is built along the river and the waterways thread their way through bridges, houses, pavilions and flagstone streets as well as alleys, perfectly presenting the unique architectural elements of a Jiangnan water town. The four old streets in the east, west, south and north of Wuzhen are intersected like a “cross”, dividing the ancient town into two chessboards where the streets are parallel to the river and the land is adjacent to the river. Wuzhen East Gate Scenic Area is the traditional residential area and workshop district, so tourists can choose to visit in the morning to appreciate the ancient dwellings and have a good taste of local flavor snacks along the street there at noon. In the afternoon, Wuzhen West Gate Scenic Area with various shops is a good choice. The bridge is an indispensable part of ancient towns south of the Yangtze River, Wuzhen, with 30 bridges, is the genuine town with “a bridge every 100 steps”. Wuzhen West Gate Scenic Area has Tongji Bridge and Renji Bridge. In the middle section of and at the East Gate of Wuzhen, there are bridges including Yingjia Bridge, Taiping Bridge, Renshou Bridge, Yong’an Bridge, Fengyuan Double Bridge; and at the South Gate of Wuzhen there are Fuxing Bridge and Funan Bridge; and Tiyun Bridge and Liji Bridge are at the North Gate of Wuzhen.
