Liugong Island Scenic Spot
Liugong Island, located in the Weihai Bay, 2.1 sea miles east of the city proper of Weihai in Shandong, is the birthplace of the first navy in modern China. It is also the national humiliation land witnessing the complete collapse of the Northern Navy of the Qing Dynasty as well as the 42 years colonial rule of Britain. It was opened to the tourists in 1985 and has become the national civilized scenic spot and the famous educational base of patriotism throughout the country. The human landscape of the Liugong Island is rich and unique, including the historic sites of the Warring States dating back to one thousand years ago and the moving stories about Liugong and his wife; it also possesses a large number of cultural relics and historic sites including the North Navy Commander’s Office of the Qing Dynasty and the School of Navy as well as plenty of European style buildings reserved from the British colonial period.
